Tony Mandarich - Former NFL player admits steroid, alcohol, and painkillers use in TV interview

9/30/2008

NEW YORK (AP) — Former NFL draft bust Tony Mandarich said he used steroids at Michigan State and faked a doping test before the 1988 Rose Bowl.
He also said during an interview on Inside the NFL that will air Wednesday on Showtime that he did not use steroids in the NFL but was addicted to alcohol and painkillers.

Mandarich, whose autobiography will be released in March, said he provided a fake urine sample to evade detection before the '88 Rose Bowl in which Michigan State beat Southern California 20-17. Mandarich said he couldn't confirm a report that other players did the same.

The offensive lineman was the No. 2 overall pick in 1989 by the Packers. He lasted just three years with Green Bay amid rumors of steroid use.

Tony Mandarich - Former NFL Offensive Lineman Helps Others Combat Drug and Alcohol Addiction With the Release of His Book

Tony Mandarich, former NFL offensive lineman for the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts, releases a tell-all memoir in March 2009 detailing his NFL career and drug and alcohol abuse.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) January 22, 2009 -- On March 23, 2009, former NFL offensive lineman and 1989 first-round draft pick Tony Mandarich releases his book, "My Dirty Little Secrets: Drugs, Alcohol & God - The Tony Mandarich Story." The book is being released on the 20th anniversary of that infamous draft pick, in hopes of helping others with addiction problems.

"The main purpose of this book is to help people with addictions," explains Tony. "I wanted to show people that there are options and treatments for a better way of life, a healthier way of life. This book explains what really happened to me behind the scenes."

After a highly successful and nationally publicized collegiate career at Michigan State University, Tony was drafted number two overall in 1989 by the Green Bay Packers. The hype about being "the best offensive line prospect ever", along with Tony's addictions, was more than he could live up to, and his life came crashing down around him. After three more years of alcohol and painkiller abuse, Tony went into treatment and now considers it a privilege to be able to help other addicts and alcoholics when called upon.

This memoir, "My Dirty Little Secrets…" takes the reader inside Tony's private life and the effects that his addictions had on his family, friends and teammates. The book highlights what it took for this former NFL player to break the cycle of addiction. Though it details Tony's college and NFL career, it is written in such a way that even non-sports fans can relate. This is not a book about football; rather, it is a life-changing book about the dangerous addictions of drugs and alcohol, and about the hope in recovery.

The response to the pre-release of this book has been overwhelming; people with drug and alcohol addictions have already begun contacting Tony for advice and guidance. Capturing the attention of the recovery community, and inspiring others to seek help and recovery, is what motivated Tony Mandarich to tell his story.
