Steven Adler - Ex-Guns N Roses Drummer Pleads Not Guilty To Drug Charges, Will Remain In Rehab

Musician breaks down during hearing in Los Angeles.

Aug. 20, 2008

Fidgeting, sniffling and wiping tears from his eyes, Steven Adler, who was Guns N' Roses' drummer for five years before being fired in 1990, pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning (August 20) to drug charges. He was ordered by a judge to remain in drug rehabilitation at the Pasadena Recovery Center in Pasadena, California, for at least the next month.

According to The Associated Press, Adler went before a judge in Los Angeles Superior Court with a friend and therapist by his side. The judge instructed the rocker to continue with his rehab as he awaits a preliminary hearing on a felony drug-possession count and a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of drugs. Adler was arrested last month after police were called to a Los Angeles home, which Adler allegedly refused to leave and was creating a disturbance. He was released after posting $10,000 bail.

The 43-year-old musician, who was reportedly set to star in a spin-off of VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" called "Sober Living" after finishing his stint on the just-wrapped second season of "Rehab," was also arrested on an outstanding warrant dating back to 2005, when he was charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance and driving on a suspended license. The warrant was issued because he allegedly didn't show up for an April 2006 court date on the case.

AP reported that Adler's attorney claimed his continued recovery is being monitored by celebrity rehab specialist, Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Adler, who was a childhood friend of ex-GN'R guitarist Slash, was an original member of the iconic hard-rock outfit and appeared on the band's first three releases, including their breakthrough LP, 1987's Appetite for Destruction. He was fired from the group in 1990 due to his ongoing struggle with drug addiction, and suffered a stroke in 1996 after ingesting drugs. He suffered a second stroke a short while later, and was left with impaired speech.

Judge orders Steven Adler to more rehab

12/19/08

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler is going to spend more time in rehab.

A court commissioner in Los Angeles agreed Friday to place Adler in a state-sanctioned drug rehabilitation program and keep Adler out of prison.

Adler's court appearance came a day after TV audiences watched him graduate from a drug-treatment program that is the focus of VH1's show "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew."

Adler missed a court appearance last week, but told the court on Friday that he had been in another rehab program that he completed just earlier in the day.

Los Angeles police arrested the rocker in July. He was charged with felony drug possession and a misdemeanor count of being under the influence of drugs. Adler will remain on probation while he tries to complete the state program.
