Celebs - It's hip to be sober

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll have often been thought of as if they were peanut butter, jelly and, I guess, bread – living together in perfect harmony.
Maybe that’s all about to change. Could we be entering an age of sex, sobriety and rock ‘n’ roll?
While high-profile sobriety among celebs is nothing new, it seems as though it’s becoming more prevalent.
VH1 has even documented the sobriety process with both “Celebrity Rehab” and “Sober House.” I’ll admit it, I was skeptical of such a show. Did I really need to know about the sad life of Kenickie from “Grease”?
But the show is more than that just a vehicle to say “look at these people.”
Eminem’s latest album, “Relapse,” is his first after a stretch in rehab for drug addiction. While the album gives shoutouts to Xanax and Jack Daniels, the Detroit rapper has no problem hiding his sobriety.
According to Spin.com, Eminem told the crowd during a hometown show on Tuesday, “This might actually be one of the best shows I’ve ever done. ‘Cause when I get offstage, I’m actually going to remember it.”
Yes, this is the same Eminem with songs that sometimes make lighthearted comments about rape and violence.
Pink’s latest album contains the aptly titled, “Sober” on which she asks “But how do I feel this good sober?” While the song is definitely not Pink’s best work, it does a great job showing life isn’t always great if you’re messed up all the time.
Yes this is the same Pink who wanted to party like a rock star after leaving her husband on “So What.”
MTV recently aired (several times because that’s what the network does) a one-hour special documenting the quest for sobriety taken by “Jackass” alum Steve-O. The show took viewers from Steve-O’s lowest points of addiction through his sobriety to his experience being a contestant on “Dancing With The Stars.”
Yes, this is the same Steve-O who used to staple his scrotum to his leg on stage while performing something called “The Butterfly.”
All three of these cases beg the question, should we judge a celebrity by how they entertain us or by the person they really are?
While you don’t have to like everything a celeb does during his or her career, you still should take some time to remember these are real people with real problems.
Celebrate their recovery.
