Motorcyclist dies in custody hours after drug related arrest

LAKEWOOD – A man stopped after several traffic violations died hours after he was arrested for drug possession.

Police say they pulled 29-year-old motorcycle driver Joshua Giebel over Sunday evening in the area of Alameda Avenue and Depew Street for traffic violations.

Giebel was then arrested for possession of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Lakewood Police took Giebel to the police department to be booked and then transferred him to Jefferson County Jail at around 3 a.m.

While transporting Giebel to the jail, police say he lost consciousness and was taken to a local hospital where he died about an hour and a half later.

During their investigation, police learned from another arrestee who had been in a holding cell with Giebel that Giebel had worked his arm around a partition to retrieve some of the suspected methamphetamine. According to the arrestee, Giebel then swallowed it.

The Jefferson County Coroner's office is working to establish a cause of death.
