Daughter Calls Police On Her Drunk Driving Mom
- 5th DUI Arrest
(CBS) PROVO, Utah A mom was arrested for allegedly driving drunk on an Orem, Utah, street and it appears it was her young daughter who turned her in.
Authorities aren’t saying who called police but according to court records it was her daughter.
Police were waiting when Stefanie Mendoza drove up to her home Monday night.
“She managed to get home safely thank goodness,” says Lt. Doug Edwards with the Orem Police Department.
Orem police got a report of a drunk driver. The caller said Mendoza was driving drunk and should be arriving at her home shortly. Officers were there to meet her when she pulled up to the apartment.
“They performed field sobriety tests,” says Lt. Edwards. “She was obviously intoxicated.”
A court document states that Mendoza’s blood alcohol content test came back as .258. That’s more than three times the legal limit.
“That’s a lot of alcohol,” said Lt. Edwards. “She was intoxicated to the point she had no business driving and they arrested her.”
This is Mendoza’s fifth time in the Utah County Jail on DUI charges since 2001.
This time it appears her concerned little girl turned her in.
Kendra Waite lives across the street. She knows the child who lives in the apartment, but she doesn’t know Mendoza. She believes the little girl is 12 years old.
“I talked to the little girl quite often. She’s asked for help once in a while,” Waite said. “I’ve given her rides a couple of times, just to where her mom works.”
Waite further said, “She takes care of herself quite often because her mom works and as far as I know she’s at home alone quite a bit.”
Waite hopes after this arrest Mendoza will make some changes.
“It’s sad,” she said. “I guess it makes me frustrated that people don’t realize what they’re doing. But it’s hard to realize what you’re doing when you’re drunk and not thinking clearly anyway.”
Since Mendoza has more than three DUI charges the most recent charge will be a felony.
