RE: Sentencing of Shelley Malil
Dear Honorable Judge Elias,
I reached out to Shelley Malil back in 2008 when he was first arrested on the charges he is being sentenced on
December 16, 2010 in your courtroom.
Part of my outreach prison ministry is to send inmates copies of a book I wrote entitled
"Once Life Matters: A New Beginning." I sent one to Mr. Malil and was surprised when I received a response letter letting me know how much of an impact my book had on him.
I have a special burden for celebrities like Mr. Malil, because back 30 years ago I worked with some of the top recording stars and myself got arrested and sent to prison because of my wild lifestyle. No one from the entertainment business reached out to me with any hopeful messages. I vowed if I ever had the opportunity to help someone who got themselves in my same situation I would do it. That is why I wrote my book and why I sent it to Mr. Malil. It contains Hope. And Mr. Malil explained that he experienced that same Hope I wrote about in detail in my
book.
Mr. Malil wrote to me numerous times while he sat in county jail awaiting trial and I responded by sending him other books that I know helped him in his spiritual growth in Christ.
I believe Mr. Malil is not the same person who first committed this crime. Yes, he certainly has the same body but inside, deep within his spirit, he is a changed man who only wants to serve God and help others. I believe he is transformed.
Please keep this in mind when you sentence Mr. Malil. I believe he is able to help others and pray you will find it in your heart to give him the low end of your sentencing guidelines and place him in a facility where he can be used by God.
Thank you for your consideration.
