Kiefer Sutherland - Popular "24" actor arrested on DUI in LA
Sept. 25, 2007
LOS ANGELES - Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Tuesday on misdemeanor drunk driving charges after failing a field sobriety test, police officials said.
The actor was pulled over at about 1:10 a.m. in West Los Angeles after officers spotted him making an illegal U-turn, said Officer Kevin Maiberger.
Sutherland, 40, tested over the state's legal blood alcohol limit of .08 percent, and was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence, Officer Karen Smith said.
He was released around 4 a.m. after posting $25,000 bail, according to Sheriff's Department records.
Maiberger said Sutherland was scheduled to appear in court Oct. 16.
Sutherland won a best actor Emmy award last year for his performance on the Fox TV series "24." The series is set to return to the air in January.
This is the actor's second DUI in the past five years -- he was arrested in 2004. By California law, if he's convicted, he must serve a mandatory minimum of five days in jail.
Sutherland is scheduled to face a judge on October 16, 2007.

Kiefer Sutherland - '24' actor gets 48 days in jail
BY NANCY DILLON - DAILY NEWS WEST COAST BUREAU CHIEF
Wednesday, October 10th 2007
LOS ANGELES - It's 48 days in the clink for "24" star Kiefer Sutherland.
The Emmy-winning actor who plays all-American hero Jack Bauer on the hit Fox TV series pleaded no contest to a single DUI count yesterday in a deal that leaves little room for one of his signature TV escapes.
Sutherland must serve 18 days starting Dec. 21 to pay for the fact that his recent drunk-driving bust violated the probation terms of his 2004 DUI conviction. Cushy house arrest with electronic monitoring is strictly forbidden. He then must serve another 30 days by July, with no Paris Hilton-style reprieve, officials said.
"He has to serve the time ... [There's] no credit for overcrowding," said Frank Mateljan, spokesman for Los Angeles city prosecutor Rocky Delgadillo.
Sutherland, now a twice-convicted drunk driver, was busted last month after making an illegal U-turn in West Hollywood and flunking a breath test at the scene.
"I'm very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited," Sutherland, 40, said in a statement. "I'm deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers on 24 and at 20th Century Fox."
Fox issued a statement of support for Sutherland reiterating its commitment to a "long relationship" with him. The actor must also complete an 18-month alcohol-education program and get therapy.

Sutherland to remain Ford pitchman
TORONTO -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving says it's not happy that Ford Canada will continue using convicted drunk driver Keifer Sutherland as the voice behind the automaker's T-V ads.
The Canadian actor is in jail in California serving a 48-days sentence for a drunk driving conviction.
Sutherland, who won the best actor Emmy award last year, was arrested in September in Los Angeles.
It's his third conviction for driving under the influence.
MADD Canada President Margaret Miller says it's tasteless for Ford to keep Sutherland as its pitchman, knowing that impaired driving kills or injures thousands of people on Canadian roads every year.
Miller says there are many other more deserving celebrities in Canada who can act as better role models.

Kiefer Sutherland out of jail after 48 days
Jan 21, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Kiefer Sutherland has been released from jail after serving 48 days on a drunken driving charge, according to a police official.
Two police spokesmen did not return phone calls seeking confirmation of a story on People magazine's Web site saying the 41-year-old actor walked out of jail at 12:05 a.m. Monday, hours earlier than had been expected.
But a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity and wasn't authorized to speak publicly confirmed that Sutherland had been released.
People quoted police Officer John Balian as saying, "(Kiefer) looked like he was glad to be out," and that Sutherland was wearing a shirt and jeans when he left the facility.
Sutherland — the star of Fox television's drama, "24" — has spent his sentence cleaning sheets, pillowcases and blankets on laundry duty, Balian told The Associated Press on Friday.
"He was very humble, never complained," Balian said. "He didn't give us any problems at all."
Sutherland pleaded no contest in October to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He was sentenced to 30 days, as well as 18 days for violating probation stemming from a 2004 drunken-driving arrest.
After entering his plea last fall, Sutherland issued a statement saying he was "very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited recently, and I'm deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers."
He was granted a request to serve his time in suburban Glendale's city jail rather than in the overcrowded downtown Los Angeles County jail. The trade-off was that he could not shave any time off his sentence for good behavior or early release because of overcrowding.
The actor must also serve five years probation and complete an 18-month alcohol education program and attend weekly therapy sessions for six months.
